Type
Civil defence facility
Region
Fitzroy-Mackay

Broad Street, Sarina 4737

Located in Broad Street, central Sarina, the WWII era public air raid shelter exists as a reminder of Queensland’s war time past in rural areas. Sarina’s proximity to Mackay and it’s aerodrome meant that there was a credible threat of aerial attack during the war years. The people of Sarina were offered a safe haven by this civil defence facility.

History

The air raid shelter is now utilised as a local council storage shed and has a mural painted on the exterior. It is surrounded by mature trees and gardens soften the concrete structure.
